Change of rapid temporal recalibration magnitude for audiovisual asynchrony with modulation of temporal binding window width: A preliminary investigation

نویسندگان

چکیده

The subjective synchrony perception for audiovisual stimuli is affected by previous temporal information. point of simultaneity shifted toward the same asynchronous direction in a trial. This phenomenon called “rapid recalibration.” factors that modulate magnitude rapid recalibration have not been fully investigated. Previously, positive correlation has found between and width binding window (TBW). preliminary study examined causal relationship TBW size using single experimental group comparison design. In this experiment, was compared before after perceptual training, which narrowed width. results indicated reduced training. Therefore, it speculated determined recalibration. helps elucidate mechanisms adaptation lags visual auditory sensations.

Event Related Potentials Index Rapid Recalibration to Audiovisual Temporal Asynchrony

Asynchronous arrival of multisensory information at the periphery is a ubiquitous property of signals in the natural environment due to differences in the propagation time of light and sound. Rapid adaptation to these asynchronies is crucial for the appropriate integration of these multisensory signals, which in turn is a fundamental neurobiological process in creating a coherent perceptual rep...

Rapid recalibration to audiovisual asynchrony.

To combine information from different sensory modalities, the brain must deal with considerable temporal uncertainty. In natural environments, an external event may produce simultaneous auditory and visual signals yet they will invariably activate the brain asynchronously due to different propagation speeds for light and sound, and different neural response latencies once the signals reach the ...

The audiovisual temporal binding window narrows in early childhood.

Binding is key in multisensory perception. This study investigated the audio-visual (A-V) temporal binding window in 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old children (total N = 120). Children watched a person uttering a syllable whose auditory and visual components were either temporally synchronized or desynchronized by 366, 500, or 666 ms. They were asked whether the voice and face went together (Experiment 1...

Audiovisual temporal recalibration occurs independently at two different time scales

Combining signals across the senses improves precision and speed of perception, although this multisensory benefit declines for asynchronous signals. Multisensory events may produce synchronized stimuli at source but asynchronies inevitably arise due to distance, intensity, attention and neural latencies. Temporal recalibration is an adaptive phenomenon that serves to perceptually realign physi...

Temporal Adaptation to Audiovisual Asynchrony Generalizes Across Different Sound Frequencies

The human brain exhibits a highly adaptive ability to reduce natural asynchronies between visual and auditory signals. Even though this mechanism robustly modulates the subsequent perception of sounds and visual stimuli, it is still unclear how such a temporal realignment is attained. In the present study, we investigated whether or not temporal adaptation generalizes across different auditory ...
